Mites in October

    Hello Eevryone,

Back in the middle of August I did a mite count and one of two hives had a small percentage of mites so I decided to treat both hives with Api Life Var with four doses at 7-8 days apart. I did a mite count last Tuesday and both hives had mites. The one that didn’t have any previously had 3 and the other had 4 after an alcohol wash. I even washed both samples twice just like I had done before just to be sure of the count. Now the question is, what treatments are you using at this time of the year as we are getting close to the middle of October? I feel like I shouldn’t repeat the same treatment. I know my choices are limited. I appreciate your input.

    Thanks

Oxalic Acid Dribble would be my choice.

If your wash was with 300 bee then the mite count as a percent is 1% and 1.3%.  I would not treat now I would wait until late Nov early Dec. and treat with Oxalic Acid

Thank you both for your suggestions. I’ll get geared up to do the oxalic acid treatment in the winter. Will hardware store oxalic work? I see it is quite a bit cheaper than what I can get from Hive and Garden at $18 for 8oz. However it is 99.8% pure.

Yes, you can get your oxalic at the hardware store if it is the high purity.

Here is a link to an excellent article on the subject by a master bee keep

You should also watch several youtube videos on the subject. They always are helpful to me.

I have one hive that needs a mite treatment.  I used MAQS in my other hive but see it may be too cold now.

Does anyone loan out an oxalic acid vaporizer?

    Or other thoughts?

The OSBA meeting has been great, & maybe I will ask at the Q & A session tonight.  Missed our meeting last evening.
